From fake historian to real pseudoscientist, the creator of the 1619 Project now regrets a decade-long education experiment that treated her own daughter as a “sacrifice.”
“They’re willing to harm their own children. Imagine what they’re going to do to yours.”
Over the years, leftists have denied all manner of self-evident realities, including the prominence Critical Race Theory in curricula and the detriment of DEI policies to fostering competitiveness while maintaining the belief that the woes of failing education systems would be resolved by throwing government-run programs more taxpayer dollars.
At the beloved intersectionality of it all, Nikole Hannah-Jones confessed in an essay for Times Magazine titled, “In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?” that she sabotaged her own daughter’s education by knowingly enrolling her in failing New York City schools.
“… my husband, Faraji, and I decided to send her to the type of school that wealthier families with choices uniformly avoid — one that is low-income and mostly Black. Our decision had been informed by values shaped by my years of reporting on the enduring and too often seemingly hopeless battle for school integration,” wrote Hannah-Jones, who recalled a fight with her daughter after the child looked up school rankings. “And in doing so, Najya and her tight trio of Black girl nerds confronted not only the reality of the city’s deeply segregated educational landscape but also that the Brooklyn school they all attended existed firmly on the wrong side of the divide.”
“So you had money to send me to one of the best schools, and you chose not to?” asked the girl at one point. “Because other kids are disadvantaged, you didn’t want to put me in a great school?”
The New York Post detailed that, unlike Hannah-Jones herself, who benefited from a busing program her parents had placed her in, she’d enrolled her daughter in a school where a mere 19% met English standards, far below even the city’s lacking average of 40%.
“We believed strongly that if families like ours went into schools like this one, it would challenge other families with similar values to do the same,” the essay revealed as the experiment proved to have backfired tremendously upon her daughter’s entry into a high school of her own choosing where the girl lacked the basic skills necessary to get by, let alone succeed.
As detailed in the essay, in addition to witnessing kids running amok in the cafeteria as early as the first grade, claims that her daughter was proficient in the 4th grade were found to be made up as the teachers weren’t even grading assignments.
“… she thought she was correctly solving all her problems because her teacher was not checking her work,” wrote Hannah-Jones of her daughter’s math abilities before turning to prose. “Najya’s writing assignments were rife with uncorrected punctuation, capitalization and grammar errors.”

Self-described “hot rage” over the revelation did not deter Hannah-Jones from maintaining her experiment, only for her to be confronted by her daughter over the decade of setbacks that required tutoring to overcome: “Najya was asking what I’d accomplished by not choosing the ‘best’ school for her. The honest answer is, I don’t know.”
“… I feel that I failed both my values and my child,” concluded the writer in part as she expressed, “I wanted my child to see it my way, to see the struggles she was having as part of a lineage and a mandate. To understand the tremendous privilege that I believed inoculated her against the worst consequences of the dysfunction and at times educational malpractice that she and her classmates experienced.”
“But now I felt overcome with regret … my only child, looked to me to protect her, to give her what she needed to thrive. And I had not chosen her,” said Hannah-Jones.
While sycophants continued to endorse the 1619 Project creator, those ready to recognize the failures of wokeism pointed out how the experiment was obviously destined for failure and how the practice should be viewed as a warning to the rest of society on the objectives of zealots.

This story speaks loudly about exactly what kind of parent she is. Imagine leaving your child in a dangerous, failing school for years in order to make a point. Who would sacrifice their own kid for the sake of ideology? I guess we know. How very, very sad.

Never forget, this is the 1619 Project lead writer. Just like that project, she didn’t want to believe facts that didn’t suit the narrative she wanted to tell, and her daughter paid the price.
