62-yr-old Staten Island man randomly assaulted by group of violent teens: ‘I no longer want to live here’

Two young teens have been arrested in connection with a brutal attack on a 62-year-old man in New York last month that landed him in the hospital.

The boys, aged 13 and 14, were arrested on Thursday and, according to a statement from the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, were charged with assault with intent to cause physical injury.

The victim, a 62-year-old Staten Island resident, was set upon by a mob of teenagers in the early evening hours of July 15. Surveillance cameras captured the unfolding scene as the gang of minors followed the man, harassing him before eventually punching him and knocking him to the ground.

“The victim lost a tooth, suffered minor lacerations to the body, and was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, according to police,” SILive reported.

A video provided to Advance/SILive.com was posted on YouTube, showing the moments leading up to the attack.

Trying to get away from the group of nine harassing teens the victim can be seen in the video trying to escape, even crossing into the road and oncoming traffic.

“He raised his fists and said, ‘Pick one’ and I said, ‘Not interested,’” the man told NBC New York. “I thought it was just a kid joking around.”

“I don’t know, maybe that set them off or something, I don’t know, but they were looking for trouble,” he added.

“They actually harassed two other people before me, before I got there,” he told NBC New York. “So I basically walked into an ambush.”

“I wanna leave here, I no longer want to live here,” he said.

Two of the attackers could be seen swinging their arms at the man before he tried to cross the road, as eight of the group followed after him. The victim was seen trying to get away and running out of view of the camera. Momentarily, the group is seen running back into the camera’s view as they head in the opposite direction.

“He was just minding his business on a beautiful summer night, walking down the street; He ended up surrounded by a pack of individuals,” said Borough President Vito Fossella.

“He ended up running across Clove Road — he could have gotten killed, hit by a car,” he added.

“The point is that it could have been anybody’s grandfather or grandmother just walking down the street, minding their own business, and they’re assaulted, and that is just intolerable,” Fossella said.

“He’ll be going to the dentist and the doctors for the next several months,” one of the man’s relatives said. “His teeth were knocked out and he’s going to have to get replacement teeth.”

“His mouth is all messed up. He was blindsided and kicked all over his body. He fell flat on his face, not expecting anybody to hit him.” the relative added.

“The most important thing that the government can do, the most important thing that we share on Staten Island, is that innocent people shouldn’t be abused [or] assaulted. We think that is the most important issue, protecting innocent people” Fossella told the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com.

“I saw a video of a pack of what appeared to be young people, who have gotten off a bus, walking up and down Clove Road for a few minutes. They antagonized and ultimately assaulted an individual who ended up in the hospital,” he added.

The man was transported to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, and ended up with about $5,000 in medical expenses due to his injuries, according to the outlet.
