Fetterman jabs Newsom over ‘shadow’ campaign, says he lacks the ‘guts’ to announce it

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom over what some have seen as a “shadow campaign” with the politically ambitious Democrat seemingly positioning himself for the party’s 2024 nomination.

With polls consistently finding public dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden and a just-released New York Times-Siena College survey that shows the declining octogenarian losing to GOP frontrunner Donald J. Trump in 5 of 6 swing states, the time when the incumbent is shoved aside may be rapidly approaching.

But Fetterman, who is a huge ally of Biden, clearly sees Newsom’s actions to be unseemly and took a shot at the governor while speaking to a crowd at a Democratic party event in the critical battleground state of Iowa over the weekend.

“Let me say something that might be uncomfortable,” the slovenly senator said in remarks reported by Fox News. “Right now there are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now.

“One is a congressman from Minnesota. The other one is the governor of California. They’re both running for president, but only one had the guts to announce it,” he added, referring to Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) who recently declared his longshot bid against Biden.

“I got to tell you, let me say I got an opinion. If you are a Democrat that wants to criticize and go after Joe Biden, our president, just go ahead and write a check for Trump,” Fetterman reportedly told the audience.

The hulking, tattooed everyman recently jabbed Newsom over his “shadow campaign” in a post to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Sacramento slickster has certainly been acting like a buzzard circling Biden’s political corpse with his just-completed overseas trip to China where he met with the communist nation’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing as well as his upcoming debate with his GOP counterpart, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Others have also noticed that Newsom is acting like a candidate if and when Biden is given the hook. Comic and social critic Bill Maher who ripped the California governor during a sit-down with Phillips on the latest episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO.

“And it’s not like others are doing this in a — sort of a — shadow campaign. I mean, Gavin Newsom, our governor, seems to be all over the world. You know, they’re going to the battleground states in the private — they’re really doing it, but I feel like at least you are honest, and you’re saying, ‘No, I’m gonna do it.’ Just do it,” Maher said.

“The man is running for president, doing it and doing it in disguise, doing it with a track record at a state that is more disastrous by the day,” Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said at an event in Iowa last month, according to NBC News.

Biden’s days may be numbered with Barack Obama’s right-hand man David Axelrod hinting that it’s time for Joe to go over the disastrous numbers in the New York Times-Siena poll and with VP Kamala Harris even more unpopular than her boss, Newsom would be the logical man who the desperate party would turn to.
