Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly was not too impressed with Chris Christie’s announcement on Tuesday that he was entering the 2024 Republican presidential primary and went so far as to suggest that the former New Jersey governor had ulterior motives when he served as a member of Donald Trump’s debate prep team in 2020.
“Worst announcement I’ve ever seen in my life,” Kelly said, after playing a few clips of Christie speaking before a New Hampshire audience. “Back to the camera for half of it and his hands were in his pockets! His hands – you make a decision like that, you make a statement like that with your hands in your pockets? Dead on arrival! He was obnoxious as hell, by the way.”
Kelly aired another clip of Christie going hard at Trump: “The person I’m talking about who is obsessed with the mirror, who never admits a mistake, who never admits a fault and who always finds someone else or something else to blame for whatever goes wrong, but finds every reason to take credit for anything that goes right is Donald Trump.”
The Newsmax host drew a difference between Trump and politicians like Christie, saying the former president lived up to his campaign promises.
“Throughout the event, he’s wagging his finger at people,” Kelly continued, in panning Christie. “Who talks like this? He’s like a bad coach or something like that, like he’s angry at them or scolding them. He’s so full of himself.”
After suggesting that Christie “tried to trip up Mitt Romney” in the 2012 election, hoping the Republican nominee would lose to Barack Obama, Kelly turned his attention to Christie’s role in helping Trump get ready to debate Joe Biden in 2020.
“Here he is with Rudy Giuliani,” he said. “That’s in September of 2020. When did he have this big epiphany about Donald Trump? He tried to help to get him elected. Did he really? Or was he trying to sabotage him? Anyway, not happening, Chris. Sorry.”
