An independent journalist earned a truckload of scorn on social media after he appeared to tell Israel to get over the attack on its people by Hamas terrorists.
Aaron Maté, a reporter for far-left blog The Grayzone, was hit with a brutal Community Note on X after his tone-deaf tweet about Israel. Yet, even after the note was taken down, his take on the Hamas attack on October 7 that claimed the lives of 1,400 in Israel reverberated on the social media platform where he was taken to the woodshed.
“I’m not a fan of mass murder,” Maté tweeted last week and got flagged by a Community Note on X.
This is hands down the funniest & most brutal Community Notes own of all time. Big fans of mass murder like Aaron Mate really dislike it when their own records are scrutinised like this. pic.twitter.com/vjnwLUp8e9

With supporters rallying to remove the note from the platform, Maté was eventually freed from scrutiny – albeit only briefly.
This community note should be on virtually every aaron mate post https://t.co/uu2EL6yMC4

Maté criticized the “clunky community note” and those giving “false characterizations” of him before announcing the note had been taken down.
Update: The defamatory “community note” has been removed. Thanks to everyone who challenged it. And thanks to bitter neocons for reminding us how desperate you are to smear dissenting voices that you can’t refute.

He mocked every “neocon fan of mass murder” in another tweet saying, “your defamatory ‘community note’ of me just got community demoted into oblivion. Peace.”
But days later, the writer became a target again as he appeared to blame Israel for the Hamas atrocities and even argued that since the October 7 attack was perpetrated on just “one day,” Israel cannot continue its war against the terror group in Gaza.
“Israel had the right to defend its people from the militants who attacked as it was happening on Oct. 7th. But that was a one-day event,” he wrote, adding, “you can’t spend the ensuing period massacring the civilians you occupy out of revenge for an attack that happened over a month ago. And that attack wouldn’t have happened in the first place if not for the occupation.”

His terrible take was obliterated on X where users reminded him that 9-11, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and other days in history were also “one-day” events and “this isn’t how war works.”
What a disgusting and terrible take

Are the hostages just a one day thing too? ‘Cause I’m sure that they’d like to get home to their family members… The ones that weren’t massacred.

Hamas has never stopped firing rockets into Israel. So they get to do that daily?

Pearl Harbor was also a “one-day event”. The sun setting doesn’t mean the window for consequences is over.

This isn’t how war works. “Oh, the Japanese attacked us one day in Pearl Harbor, I guess that’s all we can strike back.” No. You keep hitting your enemy until they can’t or won’t strike you again. Gaza started a war, now it has to deal with the consequences of that war.

are you ACTUALLY telling Israel to “Get over it”?
