Surprise resignation from mayor of Charlotte, NC, shortly after reelection raises eyebrows

The five-term Democrat Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, dropped a surprise resignation announcement just six months after winning reelection, saying it was “time for the next phase of my life.”

Mayor Vi Lyles, 73, said in a press release that she would resign June 30, though she was vague about why she was stepping down.

“Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life. I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth,” Lyles said.

“As in all things politics, I am sure there will be speculation as to why I am making this decision now,” the statement continued. “Simply put, I am going to spend time with my grandchildren. Like many of us, I have missed some moments with them and intend to not miss anymore.”

The Democrat infamously urged compassion for the deranged vagrant who brutally stabbed Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in the neck — Zarutska would bleed out on the floor of a city train.

“We will never arrest our way out of issues such as homelessness and mental health,” Lyles said after Zarutska was savagely murdered.

Lyles, the first black, female mayor in the city’s history, had reportedly been missing City Council meetings and had been skipping monthly zoning meetings for some time. There are also reports of concerns about Lyles’ health. WFAE reported that the mayor had appeared confused at times during procedural discussions and had to be reminded at a recent council meeting to cast a tiebreaking vote.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
