President Donald Trump is calling on the highest court in the land to toss out the verdict in E. Jean Carroll’s case against him.
On Monday, the president asked the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to throw out a verdict that found him liable for the sexual assault of Carroll in the mid-90s. After taking him to court twice, Carroll has been awarded a whopping $88.3 million in damages.
Trump was found liable for the alleged assault in 2023, after he allegedly accosted Carroll in the dressing room of a Manhattan department store, as well as defamation by denying the allegations when she went public with her story. She was awarded $5 million in that case.
The legal team explained that Carroll’s claims were “facially implausible, politically motivated allegations” in the 33-page SCOTUS petition, and requested that the justices “get involved to reverse several evidentiary rulings over claims it tainted the trial,” according to The Hill.
While the petition has not yet been made publicly available, The Hill managed to obtain a copy for its reporting.
“Carroll waited more than 20 years to falsely accuse Donald Trump, whom she politically opposes, until after he became the 45th President, when she could maximize political injury to him and profit for herself,” it reportedly reads.
The president also contends that the jury was “improperly” shown the “Access Hollywood” clip “and testimony from other women who accused Trump of sexual assault, which he denies.” The introduction of the tape was “solely, and improperly, prejudicial,” the president’s legal team argues in the petition.
“The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes,” a Trump legal team spokesperson said. “President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again.”
“A judge ruled the jury’s verdict made Trump automatically liable in Carroll’s separate lawsuit, which brought additional defamation claims. Carroll took Trump to trial again, and that jury went on to award her $83.3 million. It has not yet reached the Supreme Court,” the outlet’s article continues.
The justices will likely hear the president’s request later this term in a closed-door conference.
It seems that at least some X users believe Trump’s request has merit:
Carroll’s story is nonsense and she’s nutty. The civil jury rejected her main claim of rape but decided to throw her a bone anyway. With that ruling in her pocket, Carroll sued Trump for “defamation” because he continued to assert his innocence.
Two absurd cases. Toss them.
