Trump warns House GOP that he’ll be impeached if they lose midterms

The stakes of the 2026 midterm elections couldn’t be clearer as President Donald Trump warned what Democrats would “find a reason” to do if they secure a majority.

While congressional Democrats engaged in political theater, rehashing their narrative on January 6, 2021, once more capped off with a candlelight vigil, Republicans instead looked to the future. In addition to making a case for areas of focus in 2026, the president looked beyond to the second half of his term and how critical maintaining the majority was to avoid an inevitable third impeachment.

“You got to win the midterms because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached,” said the chief executive as he addressed the House GOP retreat held at the Trump-Kennedy Center on Tuesday.

Noting a contrast, Trump continued, “We don’t impeach them. You know why? Cause they’re meaner than we are. We should have impeached [then-President] Joe Biden for a hundred different things. They are mean and smart. But, fortunately for you, they have horrible policy.”

“I got impeached twice on nothing,” reminded the president, who was initially impeached during his first administration over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wherein he’d urged the foreign leader to look into the Biden family’s alleged corruption and then was himself accused of withholding military aid.

The second impeachment came with a mere week left in that term as Democrats accused the president of inciting an insurrection after the U.S. Capitol was breached on Jan. 6.

“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterms. So, you’re all brilliant people. Most of you are in this business longer than me. That makes me smarter than you, because look where I am, right? No, it doesn’t. But I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the minds of the public. Because we have a — we have the right policy,” said Trump, who is expected to hit the campaign trail hard throughout 2026 ahead of a planned midterm Republican National Convention. “They don’t. They have a horrible policy. They do stick together.”

“They’re violent. They’re vicious. They’re vicious people, and they stick together like glue,” he continued, adding later in his speech, “We had the worst president, did the worst job. They had the worst policy. How we have to even run against these people? Now, I won’t say cancel the election; they should cancel the election, because the fake news will say, ‘He wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator.”

Having lauded the work of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), given the slim majority he’s working with, Trump encouraged the Republican members of Congress to follow through on his plan to have money sent directly to the people to cover health insurance.  He also pushed for passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which many consider vital to maintaining election integrity and as an assurance of a continued GOP majority.

“The only reason somebody doesn’t want that,” he said specifically of voter ID laws, “is because they want to cheat.”
