Van Zant brothers’ song about DeSantis spreads like wildfire after governor helps make music video

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is at the center of a new song that he believes “might be the song of the summer.”

The popular GOP governor shared a video of the exclusive new song by the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Van Zant, and his brother Donnie Van Zant of 38 Special fame, titled “Sweet Florida.” The rockers, who were born in Jacksonville, reportedly wrote the song for the governor’s re-election campaign.

“We got to thank Governor DeSantis for standing and believing for what he believes…he’s been a great governor for us,” Johnny Van Zant told “Fox & Friends” Friday.

“We really wrote it…in a couple of hours, and we recorded it on an iPhone and sent it to the governor,” Van Zant said of the song that is similar to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s hit “Sweet Home Alabama.”

“We’ve never done that before…and we took a chance,” he added.

“We really appreciate you guys doing it…I think it’s really, really special. They did a great job, and it is a catchy song,” DeSantis said.

The governor shared the video on Twitter.

“The press don’t like him, but he sure does get my business,” Van Zant sings in the opening lines. “He stands up for what he believes. So don’t come down here trying to change things. We’re doing all right in the Sunshine State. Stay out of my business, leave our gov alone.”

The song also takes a jab at President Joe Biden with the line, “He don’t care what Brandon thinks,” as well as Dr. Anthony Fauci, “Well, he’s taking on the swamp and calling out Dr. Fauci.”

“Well, we ain’t been locked down. We still have our freedom. We can still see our friends and family. Our kids are in school and we can go to church on Sunday, and it’s all because DeSantis knows how to lead,” the song continues, referencing lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our governor, he’s red, white and blue,” declares the new song which is available for download on Apple Music and Spotify.

DeSantis is promoting the release of the song with “The Sweet Florida Line” apparel and merchandise on his campaign website. Some of the products include a guitar pick with the words, “Sweet Florida: GRD x Van Zant” as well as T-shirts, sweatshirts and cowboy boot-shaped coolies.
